Plainfield was the fifth fastest-growing Indiana community between 2010 and 2017. As the town’s population has grown, Plainfield has become more than a suburb – businesses, activities, and attractions abound.
If you’re new in town or thinking about moving here, take a look at the following tips on places to eat and shop in Plainfield.
You’ll find plenty of eateries in Plainfield. Especially popular with local residents are these three independently owned establishments:
The Oasis Diner, just west of downtown on U.S. 40, was built in 1954. After it closed due to structural deterioration, the diner seemed destined for demolition, but two developers moved the diner to its current location and restored it to its original beauty. The restaurant reopened in 2014 with a menu that includes traditional diner fare named for cities along U.S. 40, and modern favorites (like avocado toast and cappuccino).
The Coachman’s decor is reminiscent of a mountain lodge, with natural wood throughout. The menu includes classic pub fare like burgers and nachos, along with steak, seafood, and pasta.
Chateau Thomas Winery, just around the corner from The Coachman, does not prepare its own food, but the winery hosts catered meals, and it participates in Food Truck Friday in October, when a dozen or more Indianapolis food trucks visit. When live music is scheduled, visitors can expect a food truck or snacks.
Whether you’re looking for antiques, modern jewelry, or fresh produce, Plainfield’s shopping destinations ensure you can find everything you want within the town limits. These are three must-visit destinations:
Gilley’s Antique Mall on U.S. 40 is a sprawling mix of antique dealer booths. Collectibles, miniatures, furniture, and more can be found here.
The Shops at Perry Crossing (formerly The Metropolis Mall) debuted in 2015, after an $11 million renovation. (In the summer, visitors can catch an outdoor movie here).
The Plainfield Chamber Farmers’ Market at U.S. 40 and State Road 267 runs from mid-June to mid-September. Local farmers and artisans set up here, peddling fresh syrup, produce, and handmade items.
